Xoriguer

Xoriguer

You are at the place del Carmen, facing the Gin Xoriguer store. The influence exercised by the English during Minorca's occupation in the 17th century can not only be seen in Mahon's architecture and costumes, but also in the production of gin, one of the most popular drinks back then in England.

Xoriguer

Push by the growing demand of gin by the English military, the city's inkeepers started producing it locally. The weather conditions on the island didn't allow the cultivation of juniper, so they decided to take advantage of the port's growing commercial activity to import the precious berries essential to the production of this drink.

Xoriguer

Mahon's Gin is produced by distilling ethyl alcohol of agricultural origin and juniper berries in a copper still heated by wood fire.

Heir to this craftsman tradition, Miquel Pons Just created in the early 20th century the famous Gin Xoriguer. The original shape of his bottle and its label on which appears the old family sawmill converted it to one of the island's symbols. This gin can be bought on site as well as in the traditional distillery located in Mahon's port, where you can also take a close look at the traditional alembics.

The Gin Xoriguer store is usually open on Monday to Friday from 10 am to 1:30 pm and from 5 pm to 8 pm, and on Sunday from 10 am to 1:30 pm.

The Xoriguer distillery, located in Mahon's port, is opened to visitors on Monday to Friday from 9 am to 1 pm and from 4 pm to 6 pm.
