Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

Built between 1925 and 1927, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is the episcopal seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Edmundston for all of northwestern New Brunswick. The location and proportions of the building make it an unavoidable landmark. This cathedral has been recognized as a provincial historic site since 2001.

The architectural plans of the premises combine the Romanesque and Gothic styles. They were designed by the City of Quebec architectural firm Beaulé et Morissette.

This 45-stop organ, with three thousand pipes on three manuals and one pedalboard, was installed in the spring of 1944 by Casavant & Frères of Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec. It remained unchanged until 1993, when a contract was awarded to Marcel Bertrand of the City of Quebec for its restoration. 

Originally, the organ had only 7 stops. With these 45 stops, it now meets the expectations of both users and the most knowledgeable musicians. It’s also one of the largest organs in Atlantic Canada.
