In 1951, the Noranda Company built this imposing Recreation Centre using Art Deco features. From its get-go, it included an indoor skating rink, a curling rink, a gymnasium, and offices. Sculpted stone sills frame the windows. The slight recesses and projections of the structure are characteristic of Art Deco.
Historical Significance
Its significance stems from its historical importance, as it played a social role in Rouyn-Noranda. Its architectural significance is also significant, as the building is representative of the Art Deco style, popular at the time for institutional buildings. The Recreation Centre was handed over to the City of Noranda several years after its construction. It is worth noting that the upper portion was built in 2011 and that the coloured panels reflect the colours of a brick.
