The Milk Run

The Milk Run

The arrival of the train profoundly transformed Pontiac agriculture. Logging camps were no longer the farms only clients. Large warehouses and stockyards were built in the villages located near the railway: farmers shipped grains, livestock or other goods to sell in more distant markets. During that time, many cheese and dairy farms emerged due to the train that made it possible to ship cream, butter and cheese to Ottawa within a reasonable time. In the western part of the county, devoid of railways, logging camps remained the farmer’s primary target market.
