Princess Hotel and 8th Street Shopping Complex

146, 8e rue

Built in 1934, this building is an urban Boomtown style. a row house with a dual function: residential on the upper floor and commercial on the ground floor. Its porch, in the center of the corner storefront, and its transoms emphasize the commercial aspect of the building. Its fascia adds visual interest to the two-tone brick facade, and its crowned cornice accommodates a tympanum. This building has served several purposes: hotel (Princess Hotel), brokerage office, bicycle shop... Since 1982, Le Cabaret de la Dernière Chance has contributed to the city's vibrant cultural and nightlife.

Historical Significance

This building makes a significant contribution to the historical urban landscape of 8e rue through its fine interpretation of the Boomtown style. Originally intended for industrial activities, 8e rue will become an integral part of Noranda's commercial district, along with 7e rue.

The Whole Set

Across from 146 8e rue you'll find the shopping complex, which, although more eclectic than the one on 7e rue, is still in very good condition.

The Princess Hotel

Notice in this 1940s photo of the Princess Hotel, that there was a window in the attic at the time. The brickwork itself has remained the same, but compared to the current decorative wooden frieze above the store's windows with today's version. You can tell the differences.
